TOM BOMBADILL and his wife are a lovely and great characters, but they aren't too important for the story of the Middle Earth (including The Hobbit and The Silmarillion). That's the reason Peter Jackson didn't include them in the films.
Anyway, LOTR is the best fantasy-mithology books even written!
Thanks, Teacher TOLKIEN!

What's So wrong with him :(

Although on account of reading it a second time, I usually find other books which I haven't read before to read instead

There's actually a bar called Tom Bombadil's in the town where I went to undergrad. Everyone called it "T. Bomb's." Only ~3% of the people in town actually knew what the name was a reference to.

And, umm, my cat likes it when I sing little Bombadil-esque diddies to her.

Aaaand that's about all I'm qualified to say about TB this late at night!!!

Tom was a character Tolkien made up for stories he told his children. He's also in The Adventures of Tom Bombadil. While he certainly seems a bit out of place and unnecessary in Fellowship, that still does not change my opinion that he is freakishly awesome and is definitely my favourite character by far of the entire legendarium, to the extent with which I am familiar with it.

I am glad they left him out of the movie; it was already long, and it was wise to cut something that distracting and unnecessary to the plot at large. Also, as much as I love him in the books, I don't think anyone could pull him off in live action -- except the late Danny Kay, as Larison quite accurately suggested.

Also, I listened through the entire HP series on audio book lately...

lol i liked tom bambadil. and i remember when the movies first came out (before i had read the books) and SO many people (mainly LOTR nerds like my dad) complained to me that he wasn't in them. as in the movie was terrible because he wasn't in it *rolls eyes*.

I wish I could finish the damn books. I never even get through the first one. But to my defence, the first time I tried I was like, ten, and it was the Swedish translation (and translations generally don't do things justice), and the second time I had a lot of schoolwork, including several books to read, which made it difficult to get through them. I still consider myself in the middle of reading the first one, though. I could still pick up where I left off. I could. If I wanted to.

Funny you should mention Tom Bombadil, though. Mum, who is a huge LotR geek, is always complaining about him not being in the movies. Every time. And we watch them on a regular basis. I knew more about Tom Bombadil than anyone else in the books, before even picking it up the first time.

Also, Harry Potter. xD
I finally got tired of the series, haha. I guess there is a maximum number of times I can reread the books. Although I'm still in the middle of doing it right now. I read a couple of pages every week or so. I'm currently finishing off the fourth book. I should be getting to the long and angsty beginning of the fifth one in December or so. (Wish me luck.) P-:

HAHAHAHAHA I HAVE A BOOK OF JUST TOM BOMBADILL.

I only managed to read the Hobbit and part of LOtR before getting bored, but my boyfriend tells me that he's like, the most ridiculous character in the world. The whole book is written in poems and songs and shit, and is surprisingly short, but still like reading a purified acid trip in a daycare.

But man, if you can't stand weird and pointless diversions and painfully long and detailed descriptions, why the hell would you go and read Harry Potter?! I just read the 7th book finally this past summer, I figured it was about time I got around to it. I thought it was really good actually, like, that would be a hard series to end without pissing off a whole bunch of people because there's such a huge fandom and stuff. also, why don't you just skip the chapters with Tom Bombadil in them? go through the book with pink highlighter and highlight all the stuff that has nothing to do with the plot. It would be a shame to let it ruin the book for you.

I like Bombadil because he rescues the hobbits from the barrow wights. I have this craaazy version illustrated by Alan Lee, and the concept of the barrow wights is so deliciously spooky.

:XD: Problem is, there wouldn't be much of a story if no one came in and saved the hobbits, so...

(And Tom isn't really that bad when the book is being read aloud :] My Dad read it to my little brother and I a few times, and he sings all the music parts, Pretty epic)
