Comment Etiquette

Journal Entry: Wed Dec 15, 2010, 3:38 PM
Say something nice or don't say anything at all, seriously.

And really I do mean it. Not saying anything at all is perfectly and completely acceptable.

I feel like I've reached a critical mass for ass hole-y comments, both in comments about my work, comments directed at me, or comments I've read others make about other peoples' work.

Why would anyone think it is ok to say about a webcomic or to a webcomic creator "Your comic isn't as good as this one over here so don't expect me to be supportive", "I've never heard of your comic before, therefor I don't care about it", "You didn't update for a while, so I stopped ever reading it ever again", "Why would I buy your comic when it is available for free?"

Just spare me.

I am going to cultivate a good attitude in my work. This is a group effort in creativity. My comic is not in competition with that comic over there. If it is, then go pick that comic over there, I can't even bring myself to argue with you to stay and read mine.

If you like my comic, I WANT YOU TO GO READ OTHER COMICS TOO AND LIKE THEM TOO. God help me, there will never be a TG clique.

I understand the whole business side of things where you want to accumulate readers and have their loyalty. There are good and bad ways to go about this.

... ugh.

If you don't like something, just don't comment on it. Just leave it alone and let it do its thing over there where you don't have to look at it.

This journal isn't about me wanting you to leave a comment that makes me feel good. I just never want anyone to think "I LIKE TG SO I CANNOT LIKE THAT OVER THERE I AM TOO GOOD FOR IT."

Not at all the case ever.

Not that anyone here would even feel that way.

That make me think of youtube comments. They're flat out terrible. :p
Any-whos, thanks for the message. It's something I strive for and I'm glad a high profile artist on DA made it a public service announcement of sorts.
Btw, your comic is very beautiful. I just love that flowy-watercolorish style and Skittles is super cute as well! <3

But doesn't the first amendment say you are obligated to be an asshole on the internet?

If we remain silent, THEY win.

Seriously though, I am sorry about this crap. Sorry that exists, and sorry that it touched you.

This is dA, what do you expect? It used to be a community, now it's all about quick consumption, very little support between members, egotists and high expectatioins from a-holes who arent doing much themselves. I've learn to go somewhere else for constructive criticism, for opinions that are worth something. The fact is, anyone who wants to subscribe here does and feel like they are entitled to bitch and comment on any work. There is absolutely no standards of quality. In my opinion, you earn the right to comment about someone's else work, especially if you are going to be negative about it. What is worth someone's complaint if they arent doing anything themselves and/or they have very little skill?

I stay because there's many people I watch and I enjoy their work and I network a bit. But for the rest, meh. It's been gone for a while now.

I don't comment often but I enjoy you posting here.

I...I honestly can't believe someone would have the gall to say something so completely heartless and cruel like that to someone.o_o You must be joking, right? Maybe you misinterpreted their comment or something, because it's sometimes hard to understand people on the internets you know!D: *total deniaaaaal* I mean, that somebody would actually comment about your(or another person's)comic like that is just not possible in my mind! Where's the tact, the respect?????D: ajshgdasjka...

People are amazing. Long, long ago, before the Intarwebs, I was posting comics in an amateur press association zine (like a fanzine), and a new member sent me the following comment: "I didn't think the comic on page XX was funny." My reaction was to blink and wonder why she found it important to state this oh-so-constructive criticism. I suppose when you put something on display for the public to see, some folks feel they are entitled to be entertained by it; whether directly or by posting derogatory comments about it.

Some people can't be considerate. I admit, I may have done something like that in the past, but I was younger and stupid. Nowadays, if I don't like an art piece or web comic, I keep it to myself. There's no point insulting someone just because that one piece wasn't to your tastes.

Just ignore people like that. They don't deserve your time.

D: I can't believe people sometimes. I don't understand how they could type something like that, submit it, and then not feel like a complete a**hole afterwards >_<

I don't think I've been around long enough to get comments like that yet... but I totally agree.
