:pointr:Chapter cover for my webcomic, Toilet Genie
:pointr:Painting with no cover stuff can be seen here
:pointr: decorative bars on front and back by :iconleichnam:

UPDATE: I altered a few things after suggestions. :3

Looking for critiques on mainly the design aspects. Critiques on the painting itself, not so much, since I can't change it. :P

I kind of like this. But I'm not convinced I like it. o__o But I do?

^^ Progress on getting TG ready for print is coming along. Did a second test printing today after yet more color fudgery, trying to get saturation and contrast to look right on gloss paper. First 7 pages are ready, and now that I have a method, the rest will be easier.

I'm debating on getting an ISBN and barcode for TG. I dont see shop distribution as being a big opportunity ... but I will probably do it because I'm going all out. O__O After producing a metric ass ton of lame mini comics on photocopy paper, THIS HERE IS SERIOUS BUSINESS. I WANTY IT ALL, WITH THE CHERRY ON TOP. DUN CARE IF I SPEND MORE THAN I MAKE.

oAo

This is the first time I've ever used the critique feature! 8D

AMAZING. The only thing I strongly recommend is some sort of short blurb or tag line or summary. People will want to pick it up and be hooked on the story as well as the art. The summary on the back of my books is also what keeps people at my table long enough to sell them more stuff at conventions. Gorgeous work!

Also, remember to brighten it up a bit for print! This looks gorgeous on the screen, but I think it will be VERY dark in print unless you get it done at top-notch printer.

That's a really good idea, thanks for the suggestion! O_O ... hm. Now I'll have to debate whether or not I want to put a blurb on the back. I've only ever written a completely retarded one, which would probably be really awesome when coupled with a serious business cover. XD

I've been rigorously test printing the interior and exterior on gloss at Office Debot. :3 The print files look loads different from what goes on the web. X3 [guuuuh. you're absolutely right on printing bungles.]

If you brighten up the reds, it should print ok. Are you going digital or off-set?

>A< I would love to see a pic of them! X3 hehe ~ might give me ideas for my own framing endeavors.

SPEAKING OF WHICH I MUST GEEK TO YOU ABOUT FRAMES. I bought an antique one on ebay and have been refinishing it specifically for this cover. <3 <3 <3 It's so pretty! It has all the ornamentation on the middles and corners that modern frames don't have [cause they're sold by the foot and frame shops chop 'em up accordingly]

EEEEEEEE.

I can't wait to show you >w<~<3

OOOOHHH <3 We should do a photo swap of frames *is ultimate geek now* XD
That sounds lovely, they really don't make frames like they used to ;w;

*EXCITEMENT!!!* XD; <3

It's very stunning, if this was laying around somewhere I would definitely want to pick it up. (1/2 for the title and 1/2 for the pretty, pretty cover.)
If print copies are available in the future I'd be interested in one, then I can pass it around and get my friends blix-addicted!

Ah, better! I like what you did with your name...I still don't feel like you need the thingies around Chapter 1...What if you did something like this?

(just a suggestion)
I know you don't want that empty black space there but that might not be a bad thing to have that empty space (:

All I can say is that I love your colouring pretty much. It doesn't look like the style you have on the comic though (or am I wrong?), which can be disturbing. Yet in a good way.
So I'm wainting for more! :)

I think the main difference is that I painted the cover in watercolor. ^^ Hell, if it was time effective, I'd paint the WHOLE COMIC. But there's no way I could do that weekly. X__X

Yup, you're right... still, both styles are pretty good, and a - beautifful - cover different from the inside stands rather as a good point than a bad.

The whole thing looks good on me...what kind of paper are you planning to use for the cover? Hard, skin soft one? Or glossy?

asiljdf;lajsdlfjkasdf <3 <3 I'm so excited for the cover stock I picked. It's matte laminate on the outside, and no coating on the inside [so i can draw with a pencil inside the cover] IT'S GONNA BE HAWT. SO VERY HAWT.

Hope you post photos of the whole thing when it's done.

oh yes, I will post photos. :3

It is actually not that expensive. ^__^ Print on demand for this sort of thing is 3.00, but on extremely inferior paper. The benefit of POD is obviously no minimum order. I'm printing with a company called Transcontinental. Their minimum order is 500 copies [+ or - 10%, as it's hard to stop a press at exactly 500]. For 500, the whole shebang including shipping comes out to 2.50$ each. For 1000, it's about 1.50. It keeps going down, the more you order. Minimum order to be distributed by Diamond is 2000, so imagine how many copies a giant company would order.... and so money is made.

500 copies may seem like a lot, but I've been doing about three years of research. ^^; Going to conventions, talking to comic shops, selling online. Moving 500 copies will be hard work, but entirely doable and entirely worth it for the quality involved. :3 I'm excited to finally take the plunge.

May be some more white would be nice on the back? Or if there's a spine, something printed there.
I wish i could buy this, but I'm broke. :,(

Y-know, I don't know Why but i think every comic should have an advertisement in it. I know! You could advertise Deviantart and Put a link to your profile on it...oh and I think the cover looks awesome the way it is.

Ah, this is beautiful. When it comes to design, I am absolutely in love with the title text - my guess before seeing it would be that using the painting itself for the text color would make it blend in too much, even when it's on top of a black bar, but it just makes it even more dynamic. The smaller text and text-surrounding bar is looking a little off to me though, like it's giving off a different feel from the painting and title font, I guess? But I think that's just because you were talking about design and now I'm staring at it too much, so feel free to ignore me.

Also, I'm really enjoying your comic and wish you luck with your printing endeavors!

it looks amazing. personally though, i think the little design around "chapter 1/by Cari Corene" looks weird because its so much longer than the text if that makes sense. maybe pick a similar but smaller/shorter design? the back cover designs and the title and placement of everything looks awesome though.

omg wow! This looks so pretty, and would so totally pick this up at a bookstore with a cover like this (not that I judge books by their covers or anything).
The only critique I have is that the little design around the "Chapter 1" and your name isn't necessary. The title stands out so beautifully with the pretty image, and somehow I feel like the design is a little distracting--so I say chuck it (:
But awesome job on this~<3 Hope you ISBN and all cuz it rocks!

I can definitely see this as a book cover! The title text is perfect and I love how the background is showing through the letters. Red on black is always a great choice in my opinion. Great painting as well :D

Incredible Cari. It looks so emotionally driven. *__* As for the barcode, I'd just leave an empty spot for it in case it comes to that point. As for the design layout, it looks fabulous. I'd keep it like that.
