Naches Coyote by blix-it Naches Coyote by blix-it
Daniel Smith Watercolors
140 Arches Cold Press
with some Prisma pencils

Rough drawing and pencil art on tumblr.

I've done dozens of drawings and paintings associated with central Washington and its high desert areas, but I'd never painted a coyote. 8< So I painted a coyote before I moved to Baltimore.

In the valley basins, there are all sorts of butterflies. Big yellow and black striped ones, fat white ones, little brown and orange ones that blend in with tree bark. But away from the rivers and marshes, the butterflies get scarce except for one sort that seems to get more plentiful. Blue is a rare color in nature, but these little butterflies have nearly iridescent blue wings. They drift under sage brush shadows and look like pieces of the sky, they seem almost unnatural.

This is a lovely watercolor. It honestly reminds me of Native American mythology surrounding Coyote as a figure of mischief, wonder and sometimes helpful intent (when he wants to).

You did a fantastic job and I honestly wish my watercolor skill was as superb as yours!

You make central Washington so rainbowy and beautiful. ;u; I live on the West side, so I'm always uncomfortable not having a body of water/evergreens close by. Man, does the sky open up when you get over the mountains though! I really like all the textures, especially with the blue shading. Normally things get muddy when working with so much colors for me, but you did an excellent job of keeping everything clean and clear.

This is awesome! At first look, before scrolling down, I thought it was going to be just a landscape piece and it was great already. Then I see the lower half with the coyote, who blends in so well, and the mystical butterflies. It really looks like you took a natural setting and put magic in it. Beautiful work! :wow:

Great one, as always. Absolutely fabulous work on the grass. Did you mask it with anything? I don't think so, it doesn't look like it was masked, but still have to check. Fantastic control over layers, either way.

No, no masking fluid. >< It's too hard to use. That stuff is made of evilness.

Just layers of paint that dry, and then another layer of paint. Helped along by brushes that come to a clean point.

I haven't been to Montana yet! But I imagine it looks something like Calgary?? 8D Which was really pretty, with wide grass plains ringed by snow capped mountains.

Once I had a road trip from LA all the way to central WA. It was really awesome to watch the desert progress from the lowland California scrub to the highland sage.
