This painting was done in 2010, I think. O_o It was created as an experiment, I was trying to figure out how to paint the Underworld before there was light. It failed as an experiment, I threw the painting in a corner and proceeded with the comic anyway. Recently, I found the old scrapped painting. Sedna's design has changed. My color sensibilities have changed. I scanned the piece and applied new color in photoshop.
In the beginning this was intended to be a horrific, dark looking piece. But I think this theme is not really a part of me, and so producing it in my art is not something I can manage, at least not with my own characters. This coloring is more true to Sedna, and to the comic. Browns and blues with light being pulled out of darkness.
This piece is kind of nice now. Maybe I will make a print or two of it for Otakon. Fun surprise, finding a decent piece of old art at the bottom of a stack of HORRIBLE old art.
The color scheme is a little unexpected, but it has a charm to it! Oh man, I don't like Sedna but he's so pretty :I
It's always a pleasant surprise to find good things in terrible old art piles! But even if the old art is terrible, you might be able to mine some good ideas from it.
I just stumbled upon this, haven't red the comic, lovely picture, very atmospheric, you really get the impression this is a freeze frame of a much bigger picture/story. very nice!
